Taylor Russell McKenzie was conceived in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 18, 1994. She was also raised in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Russell was born to both black and white parents. She grew up with her mom's side. She claimed that the color of her skin was the primary reason for her feeling disregarded by her peers as a child. The family struggled with financial issues. They were constantly on the move and relocated 16 times in order to assist her father's career. Russell spoke out about how despite this hardship, Russell said that she was always interested in creativity in her early years. She wanted to become ballet dancer, then to become an artist. At the age of 18, she took her first acting class, and eventually, she found her spot. She used her savings from work to purchase a car and then drove to Los Angeles, to audition. When her money ran out her home was returned to work, until she made enough money to go back to the audition. This was the way she worked for four more years until she was offered her first TV part.
